After the kids were asleep tonight, I stepped out on the front porch and the most amazing sound filled my ears. The sound of fire works from every direction, echoing through the Treasure Valley. It was simple something to behold...gave me goose bumps. The sounds and smells of the 4th of July. It really made me stop and think. First, I was wondering how Caleb and Emma were sleeping though all the noise! Then I hoped that people we celebrating our freedom and what the 4th of July really means not just shooting of fire works for the heck of it. Just like most holidays, the meaning seems to diminish over time. It really is a sad thing.
The 4th of July has a new meaning for Rick and I. Every since Ryan joined the Air Force, over a year ago, we are more aware of the men and women serving our country. Today is a day for honoring those who served and those who are still serving. It is a time to be thankful that we live in a country that is free in so many ways. It is a time to remember those great men and women who founded this nation. We are truly blessed to live in America.
I know that there are those who don't agree with everything this nation has gone through or stands for now, but we have so very much to be thankful for. We really have a lot of rights that so many people granted.
We got this email from a friend the other day. I don't know if it is a true story, but I love the meaning.
One of my sons serves in the military. He is still stateside, here in California . He called me yesterday to let me know how warm and welcoming people were to him and his troops everywhere he goes, telling me how people shake their hands and thank them for being willing to serve and fight for not only our own freedoms, but so that others may have them also.
But he also told me about an incident in the grocery store he stopped at yesterday on his way home from the base. He said that ahead of several people in front of him stood a woman dressed in a burkha. He said when she got to the cashier she loudly remarked about the U.S. flag lapel pin the cashier wore on her smock. The cashier reached up and touched the pin, and said proudly, 'Yes, I always wear it and probably always will.'
The woman in the burkha then asked the cashier when she was going to stop bombing her countrymen, explaining that she was Iraqi.
A gentleman standing behind my son stepped forward. Putting his arm around my son's shoulders and nodding towards my son, he said in a calm and gentle voice to the Iraqi woman: 'Lady, hundreds of thousands of men and women like this young man have fought and died so that YOU could stand here, in MY country and accuse a check-out cashier of bombing YOUR countrymen. It is my belief that had you been this outspoken in YOUR own country, we wouldn't need to be there today. But, hey, if you have now learned how to speak out so loudly and clearly, I'll gladly buy you a ticket and pay your way back to Iraq so you can straighten out the mess in YOUR country that you are obviously here in MY country to avoid. Everyone within hearing distance cheered!
I am all for people coming to America. That is what this nation is founded on! All of our families came from some where else...that is what makes America so great! All these people coming to the same land with different thoughts and ideas, but one basic goal...FREEDOM. Freedom of speech...freedom of religion...freedom from persecution...freedom for work...freedom for education...I could go on and on.
What I can't stand are the people who come here and point fingers of blame or disgust at us. Why are they here if they don't like it? They want a better life or education for their kids...so they come to America. They want the right to speak out...yep, come to America. Sure, America is not perfect. I am the first one to say there are things that our government needs to work on. But I am very very thankful for to live in a country where I can voice my opinion about the government and what I don't like! I can't imagine never being able to say that I didn't like a decision the government made in fear that I would be in trouble or worse harmed. America could be so much worse!
People come to this country with these expectations that everything should be handed to them. WHAT THE HECK? The men and women who founded this nation worked their rear ends off to make America their dream come true. I am sure my ancestors who come to America never expected someone to hand them something for nothing. They worked hard to provide for their families and make America mean something to them. Why do people come here with their hand open for hand outs and are not willing to give back? Not willing to learn the language? Not willing to learn our ways? The "you owe me" attitude sickens me frankly! (Of course, not all the blame lies on these people either...I will leave it at that.)
We have a generation of entitled people. They are entitled to have everything handed to them and never have to work for it! So when do we change this attitude? I don't know the answer other than I will take care of my own children's attitudes. Caleb and Emma will never have the attitude that they get everything that they want. They will learn what hard work is and appreciate what they have. They will learn that a good education is the key to success. They will learn to respect people and love them, no matter what. They will learn what it means to be thankful. They will know what American means to their parents, and in turn hopefully learn to love this country as much as we do.
I hope that every one enjoyed the 4th of July. It is one of my favorite times of the year. I am looking forward to the up coming years with Caleb and Emma. Their little eyes seeing the fire works for the first time and I can tell them why we REALLY shoot off fire works.
God Bless America!
